Fire Retardant Paint: Types And Used Of Fire Resistant Paint


Fire is a destructive force affecting lives, environments, economies, and properties in several ways.  Increasing the fire safety of your beloved one, property or valuable things is not something to think about in the future, but is something to do right now.  Fire retardant paint, a passive fire protection coating acts to resist the spread of fire. The definition of a fire retardant coating is often interchanged with the term “fire-resistant,” but there is a difference. A fire-resistant coating doesn’t support flame when an ignition source is applied. On the other hand, a fire retardant coating protects the substrate from burning. However, the mechanism of protection is less important to the final result in performance-based testing.

  • Public transportation: interior/exterior
  • Building products: Structural steel, interior, and exterior cladding
  • Aircraft: interior/exterior (metal or composite) and (wood – executive aircraft interiors)
Two Types of fireproof paint for steel applied in 2 ways- 1) Thin film and 2) Thick-film coatings. Thin film materials are solvent-based or can be water-based. They are used for preventing fires in the building. On the other side, thick film coatings were originally developed for the hydrocarbon and the off-shore industries but have been modified for use in structures.

Thick films have a higher dry film thickness in comparison to thin film coatings as well as are epoxy based. Thick film materials were originally developed for use with hydrocarbon fires, but they are now used in harsh or difficult to maintain environments where thin film materials do not work optimally.

Thin film fireproof paint for steel systems have three components- 1) A primer, 2) A basecoat, and3) A sealer coat. In addition to this, these paints are largely used for 30, 60, and 90 minutes. Apart from this, thin film materials have a 50:1 expansion ratio; and a 1 mm thick coating will expand to about 50mm in a fire.
